Ellis Thompson, M.A., has taken on the role of program director at Bright Futures Community Center in Austin, Texas. In this capacity, he oversees a range of activities aimed at empowering youth and adults with learning differences and mental health challenges such as ADHD.
Each day, Ellis strives to inspire individuals with unique learning styles to reach their personal aspirations. He spearheads Innovate by Bright Futures, an innovative workshop that crafts bespoke products with a heart. This initiative provides employment opportunities for people with learning differences, involving them in various aspects of business operations from product development to sales and community outreach. Under Ellis's leadership, the employment initiatives have expanded by 80% over the past five years, helping numerous individuals find fulfilling careers.
In addition to his work at Bright Futures, Ellis collaborates closely with regional partners, educators, and therapists to ensure that participants receive comprehensive support and guidance. He plays a key role in setting up training sessions and workshops that help staff members stay updated with the latest educational and therapeutic strategies.
Ellis is also the father of a child with autism, which gives him a deeply personal understanding of the challenges faced by families within the community. He frequently shares insights and practical advice through platforms like the Austin Chronicle. Before joining Bright Futures, Ellis was a career counselor at the University of Texas, where he guided students facing academic hurdles towards suitable professional paths. For over a decade, he has been a part-time lecturer in the education department, having obtained both a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master’s in Special Education from the same institution.
