Fern Thompson, Ph.D., is an educator at the University of British Columbia (UBC), nestled in the heart of Vancouver. As part of the Faculty of Education, she dedicates her time to nurturing the next generation of educators and researchers. Over the past 12 years, Fern has embraced a variety of roles, each one lasting approximately two years as the department's needs evolved. She has worn many hats, from Coordinator of the Educational Psychology Program to Assistant Dean, and even stepped up as Acting Dean during transitional periods. Currently, she holds the position of Lead Innovator for Educational Technology, where she drives initiatives that integrate cutting-edge technology into teaching and learning.

Fern is renowned for her work in educational psychology, innovative teaching methods, and the promotion of mental health in schools. She has authored multiple research papers and contributed chapters to books on these subjects, as well as co-authored a book focusing on creating supportive learning environments. Her insights have been sought after by various media outlets, including CBC Radio, The Globe and Mail, EdTech Magazine, and The Vancouver Sun.

In her classroom, Fern particularly enjoys leading the "Innovative and Inclusive Teaching Practices" course. This class challenges students to think creatively about how they can make their future classrooms more inclusive and accessible to all learners. Students explore ways to leverage technology to support diverse learning styles, identify and challenge biases in educational materials, and craft lesson plans that are both engaging and equitable. Through this course, Fern inspires her students to become advocates for change in the education system, equipping them with the skills to foster a positive impact on every student's learning journey.
