Genevieve Irene Hunter

Motto:You are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.
Genevieve Irene Hunter, Ph.D., is a psychologist and acts as the director of the Resilience and Wellness Center (RWC) in Vancouver, Canada. Her focus lies on mental health promotion, particularly in addressing anxiety, trauma, and PTSD among local communities, immigrants, and emergency service workers.
The RWC conducts several studies that explore the effects of natural disaster trauma on adults and children who have migrated from regions affected by earthquakes and tsunamis. These investigations also delve into the genetic and biochemical aspects of resilience and vulnerability to stress. The research is supported by a CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) grant. Moreover, the center employs creative therapies such as music, painting, and traditional dance, alongside meditation practices, to assist families in managing their emotional well-being.
At the RWC, Genevieve leads projects on the neurobiology of therapeutic interventions and the integration of virtual reality and remote healthcare solutions to enhance the effectiveness of treatment for anxiety disorders and PTSD. Her innovative approach aims to simulate real-life scenarios safely to help individuals confront and overcome their fears.
Genevieve's contributions to the field have been highlighted in various media platforms, including CBC Radio, BBC World Service, Psychology Today, and The Globe and Mail. Her work has also caught the attention of international forums like TEDx and professional associations such as the Canadian Psychological Association. Through her efforts, she continues to bring awareness to the importance of mental health and the role of community support in recovery.
As of December 2024, Genevieve is preparing to launch a new initiative that will offer online workshops and support groups for those impacted by climate change-induced displacement, aiming to reach more people in need across the globe.
