Formerly, George was the Director of the Coastal Studies Institute and holds the position of Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Ecology. He has been an influential figure in academia, having held professorships at Duke University (Distinguished University Professor) and the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

Over his illustrious career, George has published over 500 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to several books on climate change and marine conservation.
