Gwendolyn

Motto:Don't let yesterday's failures hold you back from today's opportunities.
Gwendolyn M. Bright earned her BA, MA, and PhD in Environmental Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and completed a specialized two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Urban Sustainability at the Living Cities Institute, San Francisco, California. In 2015, she was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research in sustainable urban development in Norway, followed by additional fellowships in 2019 and 2023. At Portland State University (PSU), Gwendolyn has been honored with teaching awards in 2017, 2020, and 2023, including the prestigious PSU Presidential Teaching Award.
In 2023, she received PSU’s College of Urban and Public Affairs’ Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Practices award, and in 2024, she was recognized with the campus-wide Excellence in Interdisciplinary Research Award for her innovative approaches combining environmental science and urban planning. That same year, she co-founded the PSU Center for Urban Ecosystems with urban planner Dr. Elena Martinez, which launched an array of online courses on topics such as Urban Biodiversity Management and Sustainable Infrastructure Design.
Together, Drs. Bright and Martinez have published several influential books: "The Greening of Cities: A Guide to Modern Urban Ecology" (2021; Island Press) and "Designing Resilient Urban Futures" (2023; Routledge). Their collaborative work also features articles in leading journals like Urban Studies, Landscape and Urban Planning, Journal of Urban Technology, and International Journal of Sustainable Development & World Ecology.
Outside of academia, Gwendolyn's passion lies in community engagement and advocacy for green spaces. She enjoys hiking through local trails, participating in city clean-up days, mentoring young environmentalists, and spending time with her family. Her latest hobby is beekeeping, fostering pollinator-friendly gardens in urban settings.
