James Michael Brown

James Michael Brown, Ph.D., is a distinguished Professor of Ethics at the University of Sydney. As of 2024, he spearheads the Integrity Initiative (integrityinitiative.usyd.edu.au/), a project endowed with a substantial $5 million grant from the Global Ethical Foundation. Previously, James served as the Ethics Coordinator for the Compass Project (www.compassproject.org), which received a generous $4.2 million grant from the International Philanthropy Trust. He was also the head of the Virtue Development Program (www.virtuedevelopment.com), funded by a combined $6.3 million in grants from the Global Ethical Foundation and the World Benevolence Charity.
Over his career, James has authored more than 100 scholarly articles and several books, including "Ethics and Society" published by Oxford University Press in 2022, and four other titles with Cambridge University Press: "The Nature of Moral Character" (2015), "Character and Social Ethics" (2016), "Bridging the Virtue Divide: How Far Have We Come?" (2019), and "Integrity: The Heart of Ethical Living" (2023). His insights on ethics have been featured in popular media outlets such as The Guardian, The Australian, Time Magazine, and National Geographic. Additionally, James contributes to public discourse through his columns in The Sydney Morning Herald and his appearances on ABC Radio National.
James is also an editor or co-editor of various influential publications, including "Explorations in Ethical Philosophy" (OUP), "Virtue in the Modern World: Perspectives from Philosophy, Psychology, and Religion" (OUP), "Moral Psychology: The Role of Virtue in Human Behavior" (MIT Press), "Truthfulness, Integrity, and Ethical Leadership" (OUP), and "A Companion to Contemporary Ethics" (Continuum Press). Through his work, James continues to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application, fostering a deeper understanding of ethical principles in today's society.
