Motto:The more you focus on the good, the more good you will see.
Jasmine Williams, MA, is a passionate advocate and educator in New York City, whose work champions accessibility and inclusivity. After 15 years as an art teacher, Jasmine decided to pursue her master’s degree in Art Education at New York University when she began experiencing hearing loss.
During her studies, Jasmine focused on the intersection of sensory experiences and artistic expression, exploring how individuals with different abilities can engage with art. Her research delved into the ways that art education can be tailored for students with hearing impairments, leading her to develop innovative teaching methods that incorporate visual storytelling and tactile experiences.
Upon completing her degree, Jasmine joined the education department at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she introduced programs designed specifically for visitors with auditory limitations. She also worked closely with curators to ensure that exhibits were accessible to all audiences, advocating for captions, sign language tours, and interactive elements that enhance the museum experience for everyone.
Today, Jasmine writes extensively about the challenges faced by those with hearing loss, particularly the emotional and social impacts it has on one's life. She shares personal stories and expert advice through her blog, which has become a go-to resource for both individuals experiencing hearing difficulties and professionals looking to improve their services.
As of December 2023, Jasmine is deeply involved in campaigns promoting digital accessibility, aiming to make online content more inclusive for people with hearing impairments. She collaborates with tech companies to refine audio descriptions and closed captioning features, ensuring these tools are intuitive and effective. Moreover, she speaks at conferences around the country, raising awareness about the importance of accommodating diverse learning styles in educational and professional settings.
Her current projects include working on a book that explores the journey of embracing one's identity in the face of sensory changes and spearheading initiatives that challenge societal perceptions of disability. Through her work, Jasmine continues to inspire and empower communities, fostering a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
