Jasmine Shaw

Motto:A man is known by the company he keeps.
Jasmine Shaw, a beacon in the world of sustainable urban agriculture, is celebrated for her innovative approach to transforming cityscapes into lush, productive gardens. As the founder of GreenThumb Urban Farms and the City Oasis Initiative, she leads the charge in revolutionizing food production in metropolitan areas. Based in Sydney, Australia, Jasmine has not only beautified neighborhoods but also empowered communities with fresh, locally-grown produce.
"My mission is to turn underutilized urban spaces into thriving ecosystems that nourish both body and soul," says Jasmine. "The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the transformation – not just in the landscape, but in the people who become stewards of these green spaces. Hearing them say 'Our community feels more vibrant and connected than ever' makes all the hard work worthwhile." A healthier environment and increased community engagement can enhance every aspect of life, from social interactions to economic opportunities.
Urban Farming Approach
Jasmine evaluates potential urban farming sites by considering the unique factors at play within each city block: soil quality, water access, sunlight exposure, local climate, biodiversity, waste management, community involvement, architectural constraints, and zoning regulations. Her holistic approach ensures that each farm becomes an integral part of its neighborhood, promoting sustainability and resilience.
Since 2018, Jasmine has blended hands-on farming with education as a guest lecturer at the University of Sydney's School of Life and Environmental Sciences. She has collaborated with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and advised on urban greening policies. Jasmine launched the first course on Urban Permaculture Design at the university, and annually hosts workshops for aspiring urban farmers, guiding them through the principles of sustainable agriculture.
Jasmine is the author of Cultivating Cities: A Guide to Urban Agriculture, The Edible Rooftop Revolution, Thriving in Concrete: Strategies for Urban Farmers, and contributed chapters to the Encyclopedia of Sustainable Cities and several other publications. She regularly speaks at environmental forums around the globe and has been featured on ABC Television, SBS Radio, National Geographic Channel, and TEDxSydney.
She was honored with the Environmental Champion Award from the Australian Conservation Foundation and recognized as Community Leader of the Year by the City of Sydney Council.
