Mason J. Black, Ph.D., is the head of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Austin/Texas, where he specializes in teaching philosophy, psychology, and environmental science. Since joining the university in September 2023, Mason has quickly become a beloved figure on campus, known for his engaging lectures and innovative approaches to complex topics.

In addition to his teaching role, Mason contributes as a senior faculty member in environmental studies at the Graduate School of UT. He has published more than 50 scholarly articles and book chapters focusing on the integration of ethics with ecological concerns, along with five books: Eco-Ethics and Modern Society (Harvard University Press), The Psychology of Environmental Action, The Myth of Sustainability, The Rise of Eco-Consciousness (all from Princeton University Press), and Philosophical Perspectives on Climate Change (from Cambridge University Press).

Mason has also been involved in editing several volumes, including Nature's Call: Essays on Environmental Responsibility (with Dr. Helen Green), Harmony and Balance: A New Approach to Ethics and Ecology (with Dr. John Brown), and The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Ethics.

Outside of academia, Mason is an active contributor to the popular 'Philosophy Meets Reality' series, which uses everyday scenarios to introduce readers to philosophical ideas. He has edited or co-edited collections that explore the philosophical implications of real-world issues like urban farming, renewable energy, wildlife conservation, and sustainable living. Moreover, Mason has contributed chapters to various volumes within the series that discuss the likes of national parks, ocean pollution, air quality, and the impact of climate change on coastal communities.

With his dynamic presence and commitment to making philosophy relevant to current global challenges, Mason continues to inspire both students and fellow academics alike.
