Maximus Nguyen, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, is a distinguished professor at the University of Ho Chi Minh City. Before joining this prestigious institution, Maximus held several key roles: he was the founding Director of the Center for Urban Health Solutions and the Tran Thi Phuong Chair in Urban Public Health at the University of Urban Health Sciences in Vietnam; a Professor of Clinical Psychology focusing on urban health disparities at Hoa Sen University; and the Head of the Community Mental Health Department in Da Nang, Vietnam.
A Fulbright Scholar, Maximus is not only a clinician but also an active researcher, mentor, and educator. He has dedicated years to serving the mental health needs of adults through various city health services, including addiction recovery programs and community-based mental health initiatives. Additionally, Maximus has worked extensively with local NGOs in Da Nang, supporting refugees and migrants in their mental and social well-being.
Maximus's research interests revolve around the application of Adaptive Control Theory to enhance therapeutic outcomes. His work explores innovative patient-centered care models that empower individuals to take charge of their treatment journey. A significant part of his research evaluates the efficacy of personalized therapy approaches that do not rely on traditional diagnostic labels. This includes pioneering work on the Method of Adaptive Levels, which promotes self-awareness and personal growth.
He has authored many influential journal articles, book chapters, and books such as "Empower Your Journey: Personalized Steps to Effective Counseling," "Adapting to Change: Enhancing Learning and Achievement Through Control," "The Art of Adaptation: Balancing Autonomy and Support in Human Relationships," and "Patient-Driven Care: Revolutionizing Health Systems and Services."
At the heart of Maximus's career is a commitment to helping people achieve lives they desire. An exciting development in his recent work involves leveraging control theory to address and mitigate the health and social inequities that often stand as formidable obstacles to personal fulfillment. Through his efforts, Maximus aims to inspire meaningful change in communities and improve quality of life for those facing adversity.
On December 8, 2024, Maximus delivered a keynote speech at the International Conference on Urban Health in Ho Chi Minh City, where he presented groundbreaking research on using technology to bridge the gap between underserved populations and accessible healthcare solutions.
