Odin W. Stone, Ph.D., is the visionary Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Reykjavik, Iceland. As a leading expert in environmental sustainability and renewable energy, Odin has earned global recognition not only for his pioneering research but also for his dedication to fostering innovative solutions for a greener future.
In the summer of 2024, Odin embarked on an enriching journey as a Distinguished Scholar in the Arctic Circle Exchange Program, where he spent three months conducting fieldwork and collaborating with local communities. Throughout his career, he has been actively involved in numerous international projects promoting sustainable development and has served on advisory boards such as the Global Climate Council; acted as President of the International Renewable Energy Association; chaired the World Environmental Congress; and served as a member of the United Nations Panel on Green Technologies.
Before joining the Institute for Advanced Studies, Dr. Stone was a professor and director of the Center for Renewable Energy at the University of Oslo from 2015 to 2023. He held additional teaching positions within the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at the same university. Prior to this role, Odin contributed significantly to academia and research at the University of Copenhagen (2008 – 2015) and the Technical University of Denmark (2003 – 2008).
With over 120 publications including peer-reviewed articles, white papers, and book contributions, Dr. Stone's work has influenced policies and practices across multiple continents. His presentations have reached audiences at more than 30 universities worldwide and in over 20 countries. Odin holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Aarhus University, Denmark, and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iceland, where he was honored with the Icelandic Academic Excellence Award. Currently, he is pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration at the University of Reykjavik to further enhance his ability to drive impactful change in public policy and administration.
