Penelope Shaw

Penelope Shaw is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Cultural Studies at New York University. Her research delves into how various aspects of personal identity, such as ethnicity and gender, influence and shape pivotal moments in academic careers, particularly focusing on the graduate school application process. Recently, Penelope has embarked on an exploration of how cultural background shapes applicant behavior, especially in terms of program choice and self-expression in application essays. Her findings have been showcased in prestigious journals like Nature Human Behaviour, Journal of Cultural Research, and Sociological Perspectives, and have garnered attention from media outlets such as The Guardian, Time Magazine, and NPR.

Before joining NYU, Penelope was a mentor for aspiring scholars at a community college in Brooklyn. She holds degrees from Boston College and Harvard University. In addition to her scholarly pursuits, Penelope is passionate about fostering diversity in higher education and has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at supporting underrepresented groups. Starting in the spring of 2024, Penelope will take up a new role as an Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies at Columbia University, where she hopes to continue her impactful work and inspire a new generation of thinkers.
