Motto:Success is not measured by wealth or status, but by the impact you have on others.
Rebecca M. Thompson has emerged as a leading voice in transforming the dialogue surrounding technology, education, and digital literacy over the past decade. Her groundbreaking work culminated in the publication of "Bridging the Digital Divide: Strategies for Inclusive Tech Education" (Stanford, 2023). Rebecca's critically acclaimed book "Empowering Minds: The Urgency of Bridging the Tech Gap" (MIT Press, 2015), along with her influential reports like "The Spectrum of Digital Access," co-authored with Jordan Lee; "Disconnected: Media Portrayals of the Tech-Education Gap"; and "One Device Away from Connectivity: When Dropping Out is Not a Choice," have shaped the perspectives of educators, journalists, and advocates.
Thompson, who holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Educational Technology and the Digital Learning Chair at Northwestern University, has penned or co-penned seven books and more than a hundred academic articles and chapters. Her work on digital citizenship was recognized as one of the most impactful studies in educational technology in 2018.
As the Founding Director of the Center for Digital Equity, Rebecca has spearheaded efforts to highlight disparities in access to digital tools among learners of all ages. The center collaborates with schools, tech companies, policy makers, non-profit organizations, and community leaders to reduce the digital divide, promote equitable access to technology, establish best practices for integrating tech into curricula, and support the development of policies that enhance connectivity and learning opportunities for everyone.
Based in Chicago, Illinois, Rebecca's initiatives have not only influenced local policy but also sparked national conversations about the future of education in the digital age. With her dynamic approach and commitment to making technology accessible to all, she continues to push boundaries and challenge the status quo in the realm of digital education.
