Emily Rose Morrison, Ph.D., serves as a Senior Research Associate for the Community Youth Empowerment Program (CYEP) at the Urban Development Center, City University of Portland. As a sociologist, Emily specializes in the intersection of community dynamics and youth development, particularly how supportive environments can foster positive outcomes for adolescents. Her research has appeared in leading journals like the Journal of Community Psychology, Sociology of Education, and the American Journal of Public Health. Currently, Emily is investigating the role of mentorship in preventing youth disengagement and promoting civic participation. Through her work with CYEP, she aims to increase understanding of youth issues by translating complex research findings into accessible resources for educators, mentors, and community leaders, striving to build stronger, more resilient communities.
As of early 2024, Samuel and Emily have embarked on a new initiative within CYEP that focuses on bridging the gap between research and practice in urban settings. They are collaborating closely with local schools and community organizations in Portland to design innovative programs aimed at fostering leadership skills among young adults and encouraging them to become active participants in their neighborhoods. This partnership not only highlights the importance of academic research but also underscores the value of community-based solutions in addressing the needs of today's youth.
