Sophia Marie Smith

Sophia Marie Smith, Ph.D., is a dedicated educator and the Director of Mental Health Initiatives at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Smith also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Stanford University School of Medicine. She has authored six books and contributed to dozens of peer-reviewed articles focusing on mental health awareness and intervention strategies in academic settings.
Dr. Smith developed the Peer Support Network (PSN), an innovative program that trains students to provide support for their peers facing mental health challenges. This initiative has been recognized in multiple studies for its positive impact on student well-being and resilience.
In 2018, Sophia received the prestigious “Hope Award” from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for her outstanding contributions to mental health advocacy. She was honored with the 2020 “Community Impact Award” by the American Psychological Association (APA) for her efforts in community outreach and education. In 2023, she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Psychological Association for her enduring commitment to psychological research and practice.
As a former board member of NAMI, Dr. Smith has advised various organizations including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Department of Education, and local government bodies on policies related to mental health. Currently, she acts as a Senior Advisor to the Bay Area Mental Health Coalition, where she leads initiatives aimed at integrating mental health services into primary care settings.
Sophia is a Fellow of the APA and holds board certification in counseling psychology. She is actively involved in policy development and serves on the advisory boards of several non-profits focused on youth and mental health issues. Dr. Smith maintains a private practice in San Francisco, offering therapy and consulting services that emphasize compassionate care and evidence-based practices.
