Vernon secured his Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in 2018, specializing in environmental sustainability. Following his graduation, he embarked on a two-year fellowship at Cambridge University, focusing on renewable energy solutions. Vernon is now part of the Sustainability and Innovation Department at Imperial College London, where he began his tenure in 2020 and was recently promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2023.

During Vernon's final year as a doctoral student in 2018, he developed a keen interest in permaculture, which has since become an integral part of his lifestyle and research. While working on his fellowship, Vernon decided to delve into the study of sustainable urban design—a field that bridges traditional architecture with ecological principles and had not yet been thoroughly explored. The model he devised for assessing the sustainability of urban developments was published in 2022 and has since attracted attention from researchers and city planners around the globe.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Vernon has also crafted a 10-week workshop aimed at teaching professionals how to integrate permaculture principles into urban planning and design. This workshop, co-developed with his colleague Dr. Elena Martinez from MIT, is known as Urban Permaculture for Professionals. He has authored a book titled "Designing Sustainable Cities," which was released by Penguin Random House in October 2024.

Vernon resides in the vibrant neighborhood of Notting Hill, London, with his partner Mia, a renowned landscape architect, and their daughter Lila. Recently, Vernon and his family were highlighted in a BBC documentary series called "Green Pioneers," showcasing innovative approaches to sustainable living in urban environments.
