I feel more and more useless. Why is that? I'm only 27 years old. By Anonymous | Published on December 18, 2024

I feel more and more useless, because I have schizophrenia. I started high school and then the school wouldn't accept me, so I went to a vocational school, a kindergarten teacher's school. My life has been full of ups and downs since then. When will my life be happy? I can't take care of the kids, I can't cook, I can't go to work, I'm considered lucky, but I always feel like I'm not as good as other people. Today I went to a relative's baby shower, and I envied that mother because so many people came to see her baby, but no one came to see mine.

Before, I asked the doctor, and the doctor said I didn't have a mental problem. I don't know what's wrong with me sometimes, but no matter what I tell my mother, she doesn't want me to see a psychiatrist. She just thinks I'm mentally ill and beyond help.

Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to express my concern regarding the issue you have raised. People with mental illness often face challenges due to a lack of understanding and awareness about their condition. I have personally experienced this frustrating cycle, and I want to extend my support and encouragement. However, it is crucial to persevere during these challenging times. I firmly believe that we can overcome any obstacle with the right resources and resilience. For your reference, I have also conducted a detailed analysis on this topic. Best regards, [Name]

It is important to distinguish between valuing a diagnosed illness and allowing stress to overwhelm the illness itself.

If it is a diagnosed disease, it is important to take appropriate action. This refers to the schizophrenia you mentioned, which should not be ignored and should be treated seriously and actively.

It is important to note that the diagnosis must be confirmed by a professional institution. If the diagnosis is based on speculation or imagination, it can lead to increased psychological pressure, resulting in more distressing emotional experiences and a vicious cycle. If you have already been diagnosed but feel powerless and helpless as a result, it is essential to reduce excessive pressure, as this can have the same negative consequences as previously mentioned.

The comparison you mentioned is also a significant source of stress. If you truly wish to make comparisons, there will always be individuals who perform better than you and those who perform worse than you. It is only natural to experience both positive and negative outcomes.

It is essential to build self-efficacy.

To avoid being overwhelmed by stress, it is most effective to build self-efficacy. This simply means finding confidence in the success of a task and using that confidence to complete the next task. If we accumulate more and more success, our self-efficacy will also increase, creating a virtuous cycle.

It is important to note, however, that this does not imply that failure is impossible. In fact, individuals with a high sense of self-efficacy tend to anticipate future success despite past setbacks. They believe that their value and strength are sufficient to achieve future success.

Identify your personal value.

The aforementioned point offers a key insight: even when we are in a challenging situation and perceive a vicious cycle of negative events, if we are determined to break this cycle and take action within our capabilities, we can achieve a valuable form of success. Additionally, it's important to recognize that there may be a discrepancy between our subjective perception and the actual situation. When we feel that things are not going well, it's possible that our definition of good fortune and smooth sailing may have set expectations that are too high. One approach to address this could be to lower our expectations, adjust our mindset, build self-efficacy, and simultaneously recognize our own value.

In this way, we are also addressing external social evaluation, such as the lack of understanding from others you mentioned. There is no need to suppress it, nor to harbor negative sentiments due to confrontation. The psychological state of others is also shaped by their understanding, which is influenced by various factors. While it may not be readily alterable, it does not inherently harbor ill intent. One of the primary reasons for being influenced by social evaluation is that we ourselves may not be fully aware of our value, and we may have reservations about it. To a certain extent, value is bestowed by people, and we firmly believe that our value choices will not be inferior.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Best regards.
