Currently in a relationship, do I feel my feelings for her exceed those for my ex? By Anonymous | Published on December 18, 2024

I'm in a relationship, and my girlfriend is my third partner. At this age, one would have had past romantic experiences. However, I find myself inexplicably jealous of her exes. They have no contact or involvement now, and it's been over two or three years. Yet, I still feel extremely uncomfortable. I constantly think about her exes for various reasons. We've argued about this once. I don't want to argue anymore, but I can't shake off the discomfort. I never felt this way when I was with my ex. I never asked much about her, nor did I care. It's said that true love is not being concerned about a girl's past, exes, and everything. But I feel that my feelings for her are significantly stronger than those for my ex. What should I do? This feeling of jealousy is deeply distressing and painful for me.

Hello! I'll give you a hug from afar first.

Give yourself credit for recognizing your jealousy in this relationship.

It's not really possible to fake loving someone or being nice to them in a relationship, just like you can't fake a cough. You obviously feel that you love your girlfriend more than you loved your ex, but the love you get from her might not match what you give.

So, you think your girlfriend doesn't love you as much as she loved her ex.

To some extent, this reflects your inner lack of confidence. You don't believe you're capable of lasting love in this relationship. You want your girlfriend to reciprocate your love for her.

This is something you need to work through on your own.

It's important to be aware of these things. Do you truly believe you deserve to be loved? Do you love yourself?

Love is about giving willingly. Of course, lasting and harmonious relationships require that the mutual giving in the relationship is roughly balanced. And a relationship itself is a system, in which changes in one part of the system can affect and drive changes in the other part.

So, your girlfriend knows all about what you've done for her. You can't force people to give you back as much as you've given, because it's selfish. Maybe she's already given you something in return, but you didn't notice.

I understand your feelings, and it's okay to feel jealous sometimes. It seems like you really care about her a lot. Maybe focusing on building more positive memories together can help ease the discomfort over time. Also, having an open conversation about your feelings might be beneficial without leading to an argument.

It sounds like you're going through a tough time with these feelings of jealousy. Sometimes talking things out with a trusted friend or even a therapist can provide some relief. Remember, healing takes time, and it's important to be patient with yourself as you navigate these emotions.

The strength of your feelings for her is evident, and it's natural that past relationships can stir up complex emotions. Perhaps discussing your insecurities with her in a calm and honest way could bring you both closer. It's all about finding a balance between expressing your feelings and not letting them overshadow your relationship.

Jealousy can be such a powerful emotion, especially when it comes to someone we deeply care about. It might help to focus on what makes your current relationship unique and special. Reflecting on why this relationship feels different and stronger could also give you insight into managing those uncomfortable thoughts and feelings.
