How to cope in a workplace filled with cunning and deceit? By Anonymous | Published on December 18, 2024

I am a ten-year veteran in the workforce, and since childhood, I have been educated to be kind. However, in my current workplace, it is filled with intrigue and deceit. I am always exploited and bullied, and I don't know how to protect myself. My education doesn't permit me to be like them.

Upon integration into society, individuals may discover discrepancies between the educational concepts they have been exposed to and the prevailing norms of that society. This discrepancy can give rise to internal conflicts, but a positive and constructive outlook on life can help individuals navigate these challenges and avoid engaging in wrongdoing.

In the present circumstances, it is imperative that we refrain from harbouring malevolent intentions towards others, while simultaneously maintaining a state of vigilance.

In undertaking benevolent actions, it is also imperative to ensure one's own safety.

To illustrate, in a professional setting, if one is inclined to accept responsibility for mistakes, it is advisable to maintain a comprehensive record of one's actions. This can be substantiated if necessary.

In the event that the leader wishes to assign blame, it is possible to ascertain which step has been incorrectly performed based on the leader's statements. Furthermore, one's own records can be consulted to determine whether the issue in question was caused by an error on one's part. In the event that this is not the case, the evidence can be presented to the leader in order to inform them of the facts and identify the individual responsible for the task in question. Additionally, a solution can be proposed to address the underlying issue and minimise the negative impact of the overall mistake.

This approach not only addresses the leadership issue and ensures the completion of tasks, but it also communicates to leaders that we are not responsible for mistakes and do not avoid accountability. We can fulfill our responsibilities without disregarding facts and placing ourselves in challenging circumstances.

In the event that one's emotions are significantly impacted during the course of work or social interactions, it is advisable to promptly seek psychological counseling in order to safeguard one's physical and mental well-being from the potential detrimental effects of external influences.

In the event that the issues encountered in the workplace or in social interactions reach a more serious level and involve legal ramifications or significant industry regulations, it is imperative to utilize the appropriate legal measures or adhere to the prescribed industry standards to safeguard one's interests.

This step serves to inform external parties that, despite our emotional resilience, we are not to be taken advantage of.

It is a fallacy to assume that kindness and passivity are mutually exclusive.

It would be beneficial to inform others that when they elect to engage in bullying behavior, they will come to recognize that if they select us as targets, they will not gain any advantage. This will prompt them to consider the implications of their actions more carefully in the future and to assess whether it is beneficial or detrimental to them to engage in such behavior towards us.

It is my hope that the processes of self-awareness and exploration will assist you in identifying a manner of existence in the world that is congruent with your personal values and preferences. It is possible for an individual who exhibits kindness to also possess the capacity to safeguard their own well-being.

Hello. It's clear from your description that you're currently in an internal conflict. On the one hand, you want to devote yourself fully to your work and have things go more smoothly for you at work. On the other hand, you're dealing with the complexity of workplace relationships, feeling treated unfairly, lacking autonomy and security, and worried about your prospects at work. It seems like you're facing a choice between kindness and deceit.

At the same time, you realize that although you have been taught to be kind since childhood, a single way of dealing with the world and attitude are not enough to deal with the complex ecology of the workplace. It seems that other people are difficult to control, so you focus your attention on yourself, hoping to adjust yourself to fit in. You know that adjusting yourself means more changes, and these changes are not what you want.

Interpersonal relationships in the workplace are complex. Superiors and subordinates, colleagues, different departments, etc. are all common relationships in the workplace. Everyone's personality and position are different, so relationships are even more complicated. To deal with complex interpersonal relationships, you must seek social support. Social support includes friends and family, as well as colleagues, superiors and subordinates. Talk to friends and family, colleagues, and superiors and subordinates more often to get help and support from them. You can also gain perspectives and experiences from other people to enrich your life experience. If you encounter difficulties in this area, you can start by developing and maintaining social support. Read some books to gain knowledge and skills of interpersonal communication. Books such as "The Art of Communication", Carnegie's related books, "Nonviolent Communication", and "Become Friends with Strangers in 5 Minutes" can help you. Learn interpersonal skills and understand interpersonal common sense.

Observe the people around you at work more. Keep a workplace diary. This will help you identify the gains and losses of your daily interpersonal interactions and summarize ways to improve yourself. If you don't see any improvement after a long period of time, seek professional psychological counseling.

I am confident that this will be of help to you.
